PACKAGING GUIDE

How to Choose Food Packaging Materials

The right packaging material is a decision about the food product, the intended use, the brand presentation and the route to market. Start with the application rather than a material trend or a generic claim.

Understand the product environment

Consider moisture, oil, oxygen sensitivity, aroma, light exposure, storage condition and expected distribution. Each changes what the structure needs to do.

Compare the full structure

A format can include more than one layer or component. Review the full structure, closure, seal and printing approach rather than assuming the outer appearance tells the whole story.

Check market and claim requirements

Food-contact, recycling and other claims need to be assessed for the final package and the market where it will be used.
